Home Runs: AR Marble Runs Puzzles

💡 Inspiration

Home Runs is inspired by the constant popularity of marble run and toy car track videos on social media. We identified a key problem: these creations require significant setup time and, crucially, demand extensive cleanup.

Our solution leverages Augmented Reality (AR) on the Meta Quest platform to solve this. We allow users to not only freely build but also solve spatial puzzles by constructing complex circuits using virtual, everyday items (pipes, VHS tapes, vinyl records, etc.) with zero real-world mess. This approach capitalizes on both creative building and strategic thinking.

🛠️ Build Process

Our core development focused on robust AR integration to seamlessly merge the virtual circuits with the physical environment, supporting both free construction and puzzle solving:

  • Technology: The project was built in Unity utilizing the Meta Quest SDK for Mixed Reality (MR) functionalities.

  • Environmental Integration: A key feature is making the player's own home an integral part of the circuit. AR tracking allows surfaces like tables, floors, or furniture to serve as structural anchors, which are vital for solving level-specific environmental challenges.

  • Initial Gameplay: We established two foundational modes: a Puzzle Mode that acts as a guided puzzle experience with pre-created track limitations, and an Unlimited Mode that rewards continuous free play by providing a new random piece upon every circuit completion.

🔮 Future Plans

Our future roadmap is designed to transform Home Runs into a continuously engaging and social platform by leveraging community-driven content:

  • Short-Term Goal: Implement a Weekly Challenge Mode featuring a fixed set of common pieces for all players, immediately fostering competition.

  • Social and Viral Loop: The most critical feature is the development of a leaderboard for the most popular user-uploaded videos. This directly engages the social media trend that inspired the game, encouraging users to create and share high-quality content.

Vision: By enabling competitive video sharing, we aim to establish robust online competition, ensuring Home Runs is a self-sustaining and virtually unlimited content creation sandbox driven by its user community.
