# HomePilot AI — Project Story

Inspiration

Smart homes are becoming more common, but managing different devices can still feel complicated. People often need to open separate apps or navigate multiple settings just to perform simple tasks. We wanted to explore a more natural way to interact with home technology: simply talking to an assistant.

What It Does

HomePilot AI is a conversational smart-home assistant prototype that allows users to manage everyday home tasks using natural-language commands. Users can turn simulated lights on or off, adjust the temperature, check door status, and view a summary of their home's state.

How We Built It

We built a web-based prototype using Python and Flask, with a simple chat interface and simulated smart-home devices. We also developed a Python MCP server that exposes home-control tools, demonstrating how an AI assistant could discover and invoke specific actions. The prototype uses fictional device data and does not control real home equipment.

Challenges We Faced

As a solo beginner project, one of our main challenges was breaking a large idea into manageable parts. We focused first on building a working simulator, validating commands, handling invalid temperature settings, and designing a clear user interface. Connecting the prototype to a real Alexa+ environment remains a future development goal.

What We Learned

This project helped us understand how web applications, backend logic, and MCP tools can work together to support conversational experiences. It also taught us the importance of input validation, clear feedback, and being transparent about the capabilities and limitations of a prototype.

What's Next

Our next steps are to connect the web interface to the MCP tools, add a genuine AI-powered conversational layer, improve testing, and investigate the authentication and hosting requirements for Alexa+ integration.

Our Vision

With HomePilot AI, we envision a future where technology adapts to people instead of forcing people to adapt to technology. Our goal is to make smart-home interactions simpler, more accessible, and more intuitive—one conversation at a time.
