Home Handoff — Household Voice Assistant
Inspiration When someone takes care of a home while the homeowner is away, even simple tasks can become confusing. They may not know how to operate the TV, follow household routines, or find important instructions. I wanted to build a solution that helps people manage a household confidently without having to guess or repeatedly contact the homeowner.
What it does Home Handoff is a household voice assistant that helps caregivers and family members access homeowner-specific instructions.
- Voice assistance: Users can ask questions and hear instructions read aloud.
- Step-by-step guidance: Users can follow household tasks one step at a time.
- Household knowledge: The application organizes useful household instructions in one place.
- Role-aware access: The concept supports giving different users access to appropriate household information.
- A practical handoff: It helps homeowners share important knowledge with people caring for their homes.
How I built it I developed Home Handoff using React, TypeScript, and Vite for the frontend, along with Node.js for the backend. I focused on building a simple interface that makes household instructions easier to access and follow. I also implemented voice interaction to make the experience more convenient for users.
Challenges I ran into As a solo developer, I had to manage the frontend, backend, feature development, testing, and deployment preparation independently. One challenge was connecting the voice-based experience with useful household instructions while keeping the interface simple. I also had to work through development and build issues while preparing the application for demonstration.
Accomplishments I built a working prototype that demonstrates how voice interaction can make household information easier to access. I’m proud of turning a real-life problem into a practical application and developing the project independently.
What I learned Building this project helped me understand how frontend and backend components fit together, how to structure a web application, and how to approach product development as a solo developer. It also taught me the importance of designing around real user needs rather than adding features without a clear purpose.
What's next I plan to improve the reliability of voice interactions, strengthen role-based access and household information management, test the application with real users, and explore deployment options for making Home Handoff accessible beyond my development environment.
