Inspiration
My inspiration came from home where managing a shopping list entailed paper lists, WhatsApp messages, memory, etc. It is not easy to manage especially when you have a domestic worker. The solution was to vibe code an app of sorts.
What it does
It's household shopping list where members of the family can add household items in central place. Easy to mark as purchased as and when an item is bought. It also has an optional grocery / monthly household spend. It can also OCT receipts for record and financial management purposes.
How we built it
It is a web and mobile app and the tech stack of choice is React native. I also used GPT to vibe code.
Challenges we ran into
Prior models couldn't do OCR satisfactorily and also the blob for indicating number of items to be bought without turning on notification was a challenge We even tried Gemini for this purpose. GPT 5.6 managed to resolve our challenges
Accomplishments that we're proud of
An app that we use almost on a daily basis and it makes our lives easier
What we learned
Building an app that is cross platform
What's next for Home Basket
We need testers for our mobile apps for them to be approved. Perhaps we need to market it more to get other users besides ourselves at home. I intend to make it a free app and only have noninvasive ads. Once it is matured, 3 months from now perhaps, I might try to partner with various merchants so that a user can go from a shopping list to placing an order with a bit of intelligence using AI.
