HOLLOW - the village remembers
One subreddit. One trapped village. Sixty strangers deciding — together, at dawn — how to survive the fog and escape it.
HOLLOW turns an entire subreddit into a single village walled in by white fog. Everyone who opens the post is one of its people. There is no private save file and no solo campaign: the whole community shares one set of vitals, one daily decision, and one ending.
What inspired us
I loved the dread of shows like FROM and Silent Hill - a place that won't let you leave and quietly rewrites who you are. The hackathon's brief was a "hook," and Reddit handed us the perfect one: a subreddit is already a crowd of strangers in one room. So we asked, what if the room were haunted, and the only way out was to agree?
How it works (the hook)
Each real day is one day in the village. The community wakes to a new chapter of the mystery, then makes a single Dilemma vote framed by two never-good, never-evil factions:
- The Wardens — hold the wall, ration the light, endure.
- The Seekers — walk the fog, break the rule, chase the truth.
The majority choice reshapes the village's five vitals — souls, safety, hope, truth, division — and can raise structures or set story flags that change later chapters. Then everyone plays Hold the Night, a lantern-defense mini-game whose scores pool into the village's survival roll:
$$ \text{defense} = \sum_{i}\text{structure}i + \left\lfloor \frac{\text{safety}}{6} \right\rfloor + \sum{j}\text{playerScore}_j $$
If \( \text{defense} \ge \text{threat} \), the night holds. If not, souls are lost — and with sixty souls and twelve chapters, every dawn is a real stake. The ending branches on whether the village chose to stay or leave, and on how much truth it uncovered.
