Inspiration
I was inspired by the traditional phrase books, with key terms like greetings, that you'd find in every shop, and by Google Translate. This lead me to think about Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, and how, with most countries having their own sign language, it just adds another barrier to communication.
What it does
This website has the option to choose between different sign languages, and then tells the user where each one is spoken, displays the alphabet for fingerspelling words, and then shows some key phrases, so that a simple need can be communicated. It also has some facts on each page, so that the user can learn about the culture and history of the language.
How we built it
I built it using HTML and CSS, and first built the main homepage and decided on the user interface (eg. the colour scheme) and then added the other pages, and had them all use the same layout and colour scheme, so that the website was smooth and easy to look at.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge I ran into was the textboxes moving around and not formatting correctly, which I then fixed by remembering to order them correctly in the code, so that they can be alongside each other.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm super proud of the whole website, and especially by the individual pages on the website, which did take a long time to code, especially on my own.
What we learned
I learnt a huge amount about Deaf culture, as well as learning that choosing the right font is very difficult! I also finally learnt how to insert and size images on a webpage, which was something I've been meaning to learn for ages.
What's next for holiSAY IT WITH vacaySIGN
In the future, I'd like to add more pages for the lesser known, more uncommon sign languages with fewer resources, and I'd also like to extend the project to include more accessibility when on holiday generally, eg. which cities have a large majority of cobbled streets and steep steps with no ramps, which would make is less accessible for wheelchair users.
