Inspiration

The Origin of HalfonLife

Eight years ago, we packed everything we owned and moved from Illinois to Dallas, chasing better opportunities. What we found instead was sticker shock. Rent that would have gotten us a house back home barely covered a one-bedroom apartment. Groceries cost 40% more. Even a simple dinner out became a budget discussion.

We'd sit at our dining room table, assessing needs, acknowledging nice-to-haves, and trying to make the numbers work.

"There's no way a single person could do it alone here," I'd tell her.

Prices had skyrocketed. Wages? Same as decades ago. The buying power of a dollar today? Severely reduced.
Saving? A dream.
Getting ahead? A struggle.
It's all you can do just to survive.

And if kids were in the picture? Multiply the intensity of struggle by that number.

We talked about it constantly. How tough things had gotten. How impossible it seemed for anyone flying solo.

"If we didn't have each other going half on life," my wife would say,
"everything about our individual existence would be that much tougher."

One evening, scrolling through social media, we saw another story about young professionals moving back in with parents—not by choice, but by necessity.

I looked up from my phone and said:

"Wouldn't it be great if everyone who needed to could go half on life and make everything easier for themselves?"

My wife paused, looked at me with that spark I'd learned to recognize, and said simply:

"It could be an app."

I said "Yes!" and started blurting out functionality—
"It could do this, it could do that..."

For the next three hours, we talked through everything:

  • How would people find each other?
  • How do you build trust between strangers sharing finances?
  • What about safety?
  • Compatibility?

It was our version of Ray’s Boom Boom Room... lol.

Over the years, it became our thing.

We'd:

  • See a news story about the affordability crisis
  • Marvel at the prices of everyday goods
  • Hear about someone skipping experiences because of cost

Then we’d look at each other and say:

"They need to go HalfonLife!"

Every conversation, every struggle we witnessed, every economic report that showed the middle class shrinking—it all reinforced what we knew in our bones:

Life wasn’t meant to be this expensive just to live comfortably.

I spent eight years shaking my head over this problem.

My wife would say:

"You're going to build this thing eventually. Just a matter of time."

My entry into the hackathon wasn’t about the prize money or the competition—though I love a good challenge (and who doesn’t like prizes… lol).

It was about finally having a deadline, a forcing function to stop dreaming and start building.

For eight years, I’ve watched this problem get worse:

  • Friends priced out of cities they love
  • Families choosing between necessities and small luxuries that make life worth living
  • The American Dream becoming the American Struggle

But I’ve also seen what’s possible when people go HalfonLife.

My wife and I didn’t just split costs—we doubled our possibilities.

We accessed experiences we never could have afforded alone.
We built a life that would have been impossible individually.

I wanted to build something that would revolutionize the way people handle life's expenses—
and provide an opportunity for the have-nots to experience more of life’s rewards.

The American Affordability Crisis

  • 47% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck
  • 36.4% struggle to pay basic household expenses
  • 45% say they need $100,000+ annually to feel financially secure
  • Median income is only $80,000

What It Does

HalfonLife transforms "I wish I could afford it" into "Let's go half on it."
The core innovation is the "I Got 5 On It" marketplace, where users discover and post opportunities to split shared expenses.

Key Features:

  • Smart Expense Splitting: AI-powered matching with trust-based community
  • Real-Time Coordination: Live chat and voice messaging
  • AI-Enhanced Experience: Tavus personalized videos, ElevenLabs voice commands
  • Enterprise Security: HaveIBeenPwned integration, advanced rate limiting

How I Built It

Solo-developed using Bolt.new, with extensive assistance from:

  • Claude (Anthropic)
  • ChatGPT (OpenAI)
  • Amazon Q Developer

Technical Stack:

  • Frontend: React 18 + TypeScript, 76% bundle optimization
  • Backend: Supabase with comprehensive database schema, <100ms query times
  • AI Integration: Tavus video generation, ElevenLabs voice commands
  • Security: Multi-layer protection with comprehensive validation
  • Payments: Stripe integration with PCI compliance

Challenges I Ran Into

⚙️ Bolt.new Project Size Limitations

Creative use of .gitignore and file prompts to stay within size limits.

🧠 Complex Database Architecture

  • Managed interconnected tables: profiles, split_requests, split_participants, messages, payments, analytics
  • Implemented Row Level Security policies
  • Ensured frontend/backend data integrity and performance

🐛 Bug Hunting & Extermination

  • Real-time features, AI integration, payments—each bug fix revealed new edge cases

📶 Real-time Performance at Scale

  • Sub-second messaging via optimized WebSockets
  • Maintained consistency across concurrent users

🤖 AI Integration Complexity
