Inspiration

As Freshman, we quickly realized that it can become hard to track all our assignments. With our pathways being on their own textbook platforms, science classes with their own homework platforms and the rest of our classes being on Canvas, we found it became time c o n s u m i n g trying to keep track of everything. To simplify this process for our fellow Hokies, we thought it would be convenient to have an app that does the work for you. This is why for VT Hacks 11, we created Hokie Remind!

What it does

Hokie Remind takes deadlines from other platforms and syncs it all to one place, so a student is able to keep track of everything in an easier fashion.

How we built it

We created our own Chrome Extension, which would webscrape a website and create a list of deadlines. HTML, CSS, JS, and JSON were used to create the Chrome extension, webpage, and sample website to webscrape. We also used Figma to create the application wireframe.

Challenges we ran into

We unfortunately made the mistake of biting off more than we could chew. Thus, we were not able to finish a lot of what we intended and although a lot of pieces are completed we were not able to merge it all in time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

To be able to make our idea come to life has got to be the best feeling! Since one of us had not participated in a Hackathon before, it was a wonderful experience for them to use their knowledge from class in a real-world application.

What we learned

We learned that making a chrome extension is not too difficult! In fact, now we are inclined to make our own for various purposes. We also were able to strengthen our skills on more front-end related jobs as most of our classes focus on coding but with more of a backend focus.

What's next for HokieRemind

Since we were not able to accomplish everything in time, we would hopefully like to spend more time piecing our parts together. We feel like this idea has a lot of potential and can really help students stay on top of their work.
