Holiday Dinner VR
🎄 Inspiration
Holiday dinners are some of the most meaningful moments we share — full of laughter, storytelling, cultural traditions, and connection. But distance, travel costs, and life circumstances often keep families and friends apart.
Holiday Dinner VR was inspired by the desire to bring people back to the same table, no matter where they are. I wanted to recreate the warmth, intimacy, and joy of a shared holiday meal inside a beautifully immersive virtual world.
🍽️ What it does
Holiday Dinner VR is a virtual gathering experience that lets users sit together at a shared holiday table in a fully immersive 3D environment. Inside the world, users can:
- Customize avatars with expressive gestures and holiday outfits
- Interact with virtual dishes — pass plates, serve food, toast glasses
- Share stories through spatial audio that feels like real conversation
It’s designed to feel like a real holiday dinner — warm, communal, and full of personality.
🛠️ How we built it
Holiday Dinner VR was built using:
- Horizon Worlds for world creation, lighting, and interaction systems
- Meta AI for modeling dishes, table settings, and room décor
- C# for gesture interactions, seat detection, and event triggers
- Spatial audio tools to simulate real-life conversation flow
- AI-assisted tools for ideation, dialogue prompts, and environment concepts
The focus was on creating a believable, emotionally resonant VR space within a short hackathon timeframe.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
- Synchronizing interactions across multiple users in real time
- Balancing realism with performance, especially with lighting and reflective surfaces
- Creating natural-feeling gestures that didn’t require complex controllers
- Designing culturally inclusive holiday environments that felt authentic
- Time constraints — building a full VR dining experience in a weekend required tight scoping and rapid iteration
🏆 Accomplishments we’re proud of
- Delivering a fully functional VR dining experience in a hackathon sprint
- Creating a warm, emotionally rich atmosphere that testers immediately connected with
- Building intuitive interactions that feel natural and fun
- Crafting a space that genuinely brings people together
📚 What we learned
- How to optimize VR environments for comfort and performance
- The importance of subtle details — sound, lighting, table spacing — in creating immersion
- How to design interactions that feel human, not mechanical
- The value of inclusive worldbuilding when representing diverse holiday traditions
- How VR can transform simple moments into meaningful shared experiences
🎆 What’s next for Holiday Dinner VR
The hackathon version is just the beginning. Future plans include:
- Multiplayer support for larger gatherings
- Customizable menus and user-generated dishes
- Photo mode for capturing holiday memories
- Mini-games like cookie decorating or gift exchange
- AI-powered NPCs for solo users
- A “Year of Holidays” expansion with rooms for every major celebration
Holiday Dinner VR aims to become a platform for connection — a place where distance doesn’t stop people from sharing a meal, a moment, or a memory.
