Inspiration: Ever sit down to study, only to find yourself mysteriously scrolling Instagram five minutes later, surrounded by snack wrappers and half done to do lists? Yeah, us too. We wanted to build something that does not just remind you to focus, but helps you get there by understanding both what is on your screen and what is on your desk. HocusFocus was born from a simple idea: what if your phone could become your productivity partner, gently nudging you back on track when you start drifting, not with guilt, but with smart, timely support?
What it does: HocusFocus is your AI powered focus buddy, built natively for Android and supercharged with Google’s best tools. Snap a picture of your desk, and Gemini with Vision analyzes it for distractions think phones, clutter, snacks then gives you friendly, personalized advice to clean up your workspace. Fire up a Pomodoro timer and get to work, while the app silently locks away distracting apps like Instagram, YouTube, or whatever tempts you most. During breaks, everything unlocks so you can relax without guilt. It is like having an assistant who respects your workflow and helps you build better habits over time.
How we built it: We crafted HocusFocus entirely using the Google ecosystem, and we mean completely. Gemini powers the vision based desk analysis, while Android Core APIs handle everything from app blocking to buttery smooth haptic feedback. The UI? All done with Material You, for a sleek, modern experience that adapts to you. We used Jetpack libraries for navigation, state management, and clean architecture. Every feature, from the Pomodoro logic to real time distraction detection, works in harmony, tied together into an experience that feels light, responsive, and helpful without being overbearing.
Challenges we ran into: Blocking apps without disrupting the user experience was trickier than expected. Android’s permission layers are no joke. We also had to train Gemini to recognize real world desk items in a way that felt human, not robotic. Getting meaningful suggestions out of image analysis took a ton of prompt engineering and fine tuning. Balancing all the moving parts AI, timers, app control, UI into a single seamless workflow pushed us to rethink how everything connects. But challenge accepted, and challenge met.
Accomplishments that we are proud of: We are proud that every piece of this app is made with Google’s most modern and powerful tools, stitched together into a product that feels polished and purposeful. Watching Gemini analyze a messy desk and actually get it right and then watching the app guide someone back into focus felt like magic. The real win? It does not feel like another timer or app blocker. It feels like a productivity companion that knows you, respects your space, and wants you to win.
What we learned: We learned how to go from AI prompt design to real user feedback loops, how to make vision models feel relevant to everyday users, and how to bring together a suite of Google technologies into one cohesive, intelligent app. We also discovered the subtle art of crafting UX that nudges without nagging, and how powerful haptic feedback can be when it is used just right.
What is next for HocusFocus: We are dreaming big integrating calendar syncing, smarter focus insights, and environmental trend tracking over time. We want HocusFocus to evolve into a proactive coach, learning from your habits and gently optimizing your workspace and digital life. We are exploring ChromeOS and tablet support next, and maybe even a smartwatch companion that taps your wrist when your focus slips. Because staying focused should not be a battle it should feel like flow.
What sets us apart: What truly sets HocusFocus apart is how deeply it taps into the entire Google ecosystem not just the latest AI capabilities, but the full stack of cutting edge hardware and software. While many apps stop at using APIs, we went further. We built and tested HocusFocus on the latest Pixel hardware, fully embracing the performance, sensors, and responsiveness that come with it. We also took advantage of the newest features in the Android operating system, including refined app control, enhanced permissions, and fluid haptic feedback that makes interactions feel intuitive and satisfying.
And of course, it all comes wrapped in a beautiful Material You theme that adapts to the user’s style and feels native to modern Android. HocusFocus is not just a demo of AI it’s a showcase of what is possible when you combine Google’s smartest software with its most powerful hardware, all designed to support one mission: helping people stay focused, effortlessly.
