Inspiration
To make some "side cash" my auntie in Pakistan would teach the neighborhood girls how to sew. She was self-taught (and actually really good) but for a complete novice all that mattered was that they were learning hands-on, in small groups, nearby to their home after work/ school and it was much more affordable than a professional class. This model is already being used by your community karate groups- they rent out a cheap space (library) and get students from people passing by/ word of mouth and even community college classes.
What it does
Hobbys brings that neighborly culture from Asia to the western world, through a peer-to-peer marketplace connecting students with "hobby enthusiasts" around them.
We want to take it a step further from private tutoring to help hobby enthusiasts create their own curriculums, host weekly/ monthly gatherings for their students once they've "graduated" so they can continue to learn and enjoy socializing and focus on small groups to create affordability.
How we built it
Right now Hobbys is a landing page with assets built on Canva and then "downloaded" into Softr, a no-code builder.
Challenges we ran into
It's been challenging knowing which side of the marketplace to start with Hobbys, or which hobby to start with.
Currently I posted in a few FB groups to generate interest around sewing, but we are missing the trust factor. I believe we need to invest in social media marketing to generate brand presence.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is an idea I've had for a while so I'm excited that I finally started and am working on it!
What we learned
Trust is a big factor when it comes to peer-to-peer marketplaces. How can we design for trust when we have no customers yet is something we are still solving.
What's next for Hobbys
I will be doubling down on one hobby (sewing) and looking for people who can teach it. Then I will be targeting ads to find people to sign up for those classes.
