Inspiration

We were inspired by our own struggles to find people to who share our interests, people to play games with, exchange art inspiration with, etc. The idea is that the app is only the connection point, once people are met and events are joined, the next step is to put the phone down and connect with the world around you.

What it does

HobbyFindr allows you to select all the hobbies you are interested in, and connects you with people in your area who have similar hobbies. Additionally, HobbyFindr will recommend you events in your area that fit your interests and recommend related hobbies that your friends are trying.

How we built it

We used Auth0 to handle user log-in, Tiger Data to build the sql database for user, event, and hobby information, and HTML, CSS, and Python to build the web application.

Challenges we ran into

One issue we ran into was finding a way to connect the SQL Tiger Data to the Python script we were using. We were eventually able to figure that out and get the Auth0 to collaborate with it to store user information. We also ran into issues with time, there were a lot of ideas and functionalities we had to cut for the sake of having a presentable product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We got the Auth0 figured out with little issue, and got it working well with the rest of the application. We also got the whole HTML file working and looking nice, and we were able to get the database tables mapped and connected in Tiger Data.

What we learned

We learned about using Tiger Data and Auth0, we had never used those before. We also learned about using Django with Python, and got a good refresher on SQL.

What's next for HobbyFindr

Next for HobbyFindr would be to create actual friend request systems and maybe a chat feature to coordinate event attendance with. We also really wanted to be able to add an experience preference selection, so that someone can request to match with someone more experienced than them so that they can learn more about their selected hobby.
