Inspiration

As we stay in quarantine to protect others and ourselves. Our lives have definitely become more mundane. Children have felt this effect more than others as they cannot go to school to see their friends or participate in any outdoor activities to stimulate their minds.

To help bring some excitement to children across America and provide learning opportunities for both Little and Big, our team envisioned Hobby Boc.

What it does

Users will out a form and the information they enter it will be saved in our MongoDB database. When we will then query the database to get important information such as shipping addresses, names, donations, etc.

How I built it

My team used the MERN stack to develop this web app. M - MongoDB is a open source database E - Express is the web application framework for Node.js R - React is a front-end Javascript library to build user interfaces N - Node.js is a run-time environment that executes Javascript code on a server.

What I learned

At this hackathon my team learned about the MERN stack which end of development we liked. I personally enjoyed creating the backend server and schemas that was needed for the database. Stella enjoyed working on the front end and making the app responsive and pretty. Tyrell enjoyed both aspects and in the future wants to be a full stack developer.

There were some roadblocks along the way that we had to trouble shoot individually. Leading us to research our own problems and coming to a solution ourselves.

We developed and polished our soft skills such as communication, in order to get this project done on time.

What's next for Hobby Boc

Right now our web app has a great foundation but there are some things the team would’ve like to add to make it even better.

Have resource page that littles can do while they wait for their box

Increase the types of box that we have

Build full native IOS and android apps
