Inspiration

Our team LOVES hiking, however, we found that it's hard to find others interested in hiking with us. Therefore, we thought, "why not create an app that allows hikers to connect with others hikers?"

What it does

Hike Up! is sort of like hiking for tinder, where you can create a profile, add a hike, and communicate with others about hike details.

How we built it

We built this app using react native and the backend of the app is connected to Google firebase. We also created a prototype on Figma.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into many challenges along the way. This was the first hackathon for one of our members, and we were guiding her along the app development path. There was also trouble with connecting the database to the front end, we had to switch the version of firebase for the data to upload to the real-time database.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of learning a new framework of react native, and seeing how it compares to normal javascript. Additionally, connecting the front end to the back end was very cool, seeing how we can input data and see it in the database. For our project, we also had to add functionality to the buttons and make it so a user instead of swiping can press the like or dislike button.

What we learned

We learned a bit about react native, and how to run apps on Expo Go. We also learned how to connect the front-end to a back-end database, and manipulate the data that we request. As part of our design, most of our members are inexperienced with Figma, where we prototyped our App.

What's next for Hike Up

Instead of being just for Washington state, we would want to branch out to other states. Additionally, hiking is the current option, and we would add other options such as backpacking, overnight, and snowshoeing.
