The inspiration for Hluvukiso came from my desire to create a comprehensive safety tool for women facing the threat of violence and unsafe environments. I wanted an app that not only reacts but proactively supports users during emergencies. The name “Hluvukiso,” which means "safe," embodies my mission to provide security and empowerment.

What it does Hluvukiso is an AI-powered safety app that records, transcribes, and analyzes incidents in real-time. Users can share their live location with trusted contacts, activate an AI-powered chatbot for incident documentation, and receive predictive safety alerts. A standout feature is the speech-to-text functionality analyzed by AI to produce detailed incident reports with timestamps and key details. AI is used across all functions, from suicide prevention through a compassionate chatbot to danger zone detection that sends real-time alerts if the user enters an unsafe area. Additionally, AI handles anonymous reporting by automatically generating and sending detailed reports to pre-configured contacts or emergency services.

How I built it I developed Hluvukiso using Android development tools, machine learning frameworks, and Google APIs. The AI functionalities, powered by Gemini AI, handle real-time transcription and incident analysis to ensure accurate, context-rich reports. The app integrates AI across all features, including:

1.Suicidal life-saver chatbot: The AI identifies distress signals in text and offers immediate mental health support. 2.Danger zone detection: The AI uses geospatial data to identify high-risk areas based on the user’s location and historical data, sending proactive alerts. 3.Speech-to-text: This feature converts speech to text with high accuracy, and AI analyzes the transcribed data to create incident reports with key timestamps and relevant details. 4.Anonymous reporting: AI automatically generates detailed incident reports, which can then be sent via email to authorities or trusted contacts, ensuring user privacy.

Did I use Google AI technology in my project? Yes, I used Google AI technology extensively throughout Hluvukiso. Specifically, Google’s speech recognition and natural language processing tools were utilized to power the speech-to-text functionality, enabling the real-time transcription of incidents. Google’s Maps API helped with location tracking and danger zone detection, while Google Cloud’s machine learning capabilities were used for analyzing speech and text to identify distress patterns and mental health signals. Furthermore, the app uses Google’s email API for sending anonymous reports to relevant parties, ensuring a streamlined and secure process for sensitive reporting.

Challenges I ran into Developing Hluvukiso on an Android emulator came with challenges, such as the inability to implement hardware-dependent features like a physical panic button. Integrating AI to handle real-time transcription, incident analysis, and danger zone detection while maintaining performance was also demanding. Balancing advanced AI features with a user-friendly design required meticulous testing and optimization.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of I’m particularly proud of successfully creating the speech-to-text feature that is analyzed by AI to generate thorough, time-stamped incident reports. Additionally, the implementation of AI for real-time danger zone detection and anonymous reporting adds layers of security and privacy for users, making it an all-encompassing safety tool.

What I learned Building Hluvukiso taught me the importance of combining technical skill with user-focused design. I learned how to optimize AI for accurate real-time transcription, emotion detection, and location analysis. Integrating machine learning tools with APIs like Google’s enhanced the app’s capabilities, and I realized how AI can effectively address complex safety challenges.

How this submission contributes to gender equality Hluvukiso contributes to gender equality by addressing the unique safety challenges faced by women and creating a digital space that empowers them. By offering tools that enhance situational awareness, document incidents for legal and social support, and facilitate real-time safety alerts, the app supports women’s right to feel safe and secure. It reinforces the importance of safety as a fundamental component of gender equality, allowing women to navigate public and private spaces without fear. Additionally, providing a supportive mechanism for incidents and mental well-being aids in reducing the psychological and social barriers that hinder women’s active participation in society and leadership roles.

What's next for Hluvukiso Looking ahead, I plan to enhance Hluvukiso with offline capabilities and establish partnerships with local emergency services to expand its reach. Additionally, improving the app’s predictive alert system and building a supportive user community are on my roadmap. My goal is to make Hluvukiso a comprehensive safety companion for women everywhere.
