Inspiration

In Hong Kong's bustling retail landscape, where consumers hold an average of 3-5 credit cards and chase rebates up to 8% on everyday spends like groceries and online shopping, tracking promotions is a nightmare amid economic shifts and cross-border competition. Inspired by the 2025 FinTech boom— including stablecoin regs and AI-driven personalization—we created HK Rebate Hunter to empower shoppers to save effortlessly, blending traditional finance with Web3 for a smarter retail future.

What it does

HK Rebate Hunter is an AI-powered web app that recommends the optimal credit card for your retail purchase. Input your spend category (e.g., Groceries, Online Shopping) and amount, and it calculates exact rebates, applies promo caps, and ranks top cards from a database of 25+ HK options. Features include a conversational AI for "what-if" scenarios, visual savings charts, and Web3 suggestions like crypto-linked rewards—helping users save 5-10% per transaction while facilitating seamless retail decisions.

How we built it

We leveraged Kiro, a generative AI assistant, to spec and generate the full-stack app: React frontend for a mobile-first UI, JS logic for rebate calculations (e.g., savings = min(amount * rate/100, promo cap)), and Chart.js for bar graphs. Hardcoded a JSON database from 2025 rebate data (e.g., AEON Wakuwaku at 6% groceries). Added a simple regex-based chat for AI personalization, ensuring PDPO compliance with no data storage. Deployed client-side for quick hackathon demo.

Challenges we ran into

Sourcing accurate, up-to-date 2025 promo data was tricky—many expire by Sep 30, requiring manual extraction from screenshots and logic to handle caps/expirations. Balancing AI simulation without a full backend led to regex parsing hurdles for chat queries. Integrating Web3 ties felt innovative but abstract for retail focus, and ensuring mobile UX polish under time constraints tested our debugging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a functional, polished app in hours using Kiro, with accurate calculations across 25+ cards and real savings visuals—e.g., ranking DBS Compass Visa at 8% for groceries. Proudly incorporated HK-specific FinTech elements like stablecoin compliance notes, inspiring potential retail integrations. Demo-ready with a 5-10% savings impact, it's scalable and won us internal "best UX" kudos.

What we learned

We deepened our grasp of HK's credit ecosystem, from rebate caps (e.g., monthly HK$10,000 on HSBC Red) to AI's role in personalization. Kiro's spec-driven dev accelerated prototyping, teaching us efficient prompting. Challenges highlighted data freshness needs (e.g., via APIs) and PDPO's importance. Overall, blending gen AI with FinTech/Web3 opens doors for retail innovation.

What's next for HK Rebate Hunter

Integrate live APIs from MoneySmart or banks for real-time promos, expand to full Web3 wallets (e.g., stablecoin rebates), and add retailer partnerships for in-app deals.
