Inspiration
Studying history in high school was always so boring. Reading textbooks multiple times and not being able to understand anything on the first read. Why something happened, and the cause and effect relationships. So I created a game where students can live in the historical setting and understand it much better.
What it does
Students explore a compact reconstruction, inspect source labeled evidence, question the historically bounded characters, compare conflicting claims, and build their caseboard and submit their case brief to repair the altered route.
How we built it
History Unbroken uses Next.JS, typescript React, vitest and playwright. GPT 5.6 also supports constrained character dialogue, course material alignment and formative feedback. The model does not invent facts alter game stat or determine historical truth. Every important progression rule is authored and the case remains playable.
Challenges we ran into
A huge challenge that I ran into was making AI meaningful without it having the authority on history. A freefrom historical chatbot would be unrealistic and be difficult to assess fairly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a 10-15 minute grade 10 history case. Added source reconstruction. Created teacher alignment.
What we learned
How to properly use AI in this application to really interpret the students understanding and be the best for their learning.
What's next for History Unbroken
Replace the assets with better high quality images, test in classrooms, and add more historically viewed mysteries to paly.
