Inspiration

Obviously, GeoGuesser. But aside from that, we were especially interested in the history of our campus as it is unfolding before our eyes. Buildings that have been with our campus for generations are being torn down and many more are being built for generations to come, but there's a lot of information you have to go out of your way to find. So, why not make a fun way to learn about the history of campus that anyone could pick up and learn?

What it does

Historeoguesser is a location guesser style game that is focused on learning about campus history using Google Street View. As you play, you get to learn about and history and bits of trivia about buildings you may otherwise walk right by here at William & Mary. Try and guess as accurately as possible to get a whole bunch of points and a whole lot of history!

How we built it

We use the Google Maps JS API along with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create the game in a browser window that runs off of a live server.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was that we had no idea what we were doing! None of the members on our team have much coding experience, especially on the web development side of programming. So, a lot of our early development was dedicated to learning how to develop, with Ethan focusing on how figuring out how API's work and how to adapt them for our game and Peter and Mateo focusing on how we could use HTML and CSS to display and structure the flow of gameplay. Unfortunately, we ran into extensive issues trying to use Google Street View data from the past, so we'll have to save that for a future update!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our entire team is proud that we were able to create the program with barely any experience, 38 hours, a dream, and caffeine. We didn't have to compromise too much of the scope of our design and we're very happy that we got to make it all happen!

What we learned

We learned a lot about web development, API's, and how to effectively read documentation. There was a lot that we needed to learn going in the project having no experience, but our team can confidently say that we fiddle around and make some websites and games now!

What's next for Historeoguesser! - William and Mary Historical GeoGuesser

  • More locations, particularly restructuring some functions to be able to handle previous Google Street View maps so you can learn about buildings from past and present. This would complete our scope and exponentially raise the possibilities for learning about campus history.
  • Making a leaderboard for players to share their scores and set up the game in a set of 5 to be played through.
