Inspiration
We were inspired by the idea that history is all around us, yet we often don’t look the historic knowledge because it is simply not accessible within one click. Historai steps in when there’s no human tour guide that can provide that knowledge. Or even in our own neighbourhoods, we often pass historical heritage but rarely learn its story. Historai was born to bridge this gap, turning superficial encounters with history into moments of discovery.
What it does
Historai is an AI-powered app that makes history easy to explore in real time. Point your phone at a monument, artwork, or artifact, and Historai instantly reveals clear insights about its origin, meaning, and cultural significance.
The app steps in when there’s no human tour guide — turning everyday encounters into moments of discovery. Instead of searching for information, knowledge comes to you, right where you are. This creates a direct connection between your surroundings and the stories they hold.
Historai covers a wide range of heritage, including:
- Built Heritage: monuments, temples, castles, churches, houses, bridges, aqueducts, and archaeological sites.
- Artistic Heritage: paintings, murals, frescoes, sculptures, statues, mosaics, stained glass, ceramics, and textiles.
- Artifacts & Objects: everyday tools, pottery, jewelry, coins, weapons, and other objects that shaped human history.
Every scan is saved in your history log — a personal archive of the places, objects, and artworks you’ve encountered. Over time, it becomes both a record of your explorations and a personalized journey through history, ready to revisit, reflect on, or share.
By combining advanced AI with clear storytelling, Historai helps you be your own tour guide — making history accessible, engaging, and part of your everyday experience.
How we built it
The app combines computer vision, AI, and a curated knowledge database to recognize objects and provide instant, meaningful insights. We focused on creating a seamless user experience with fast scans, intuitive navigation, and a system to categorize and save scanned objects for later exploration.
Challenges we ran into
Building Historai meant tackling multiple technical and design challenges. Ensuring accurate recognition across diverse objects, clustering results into concise yet informative content, and creating a smooth, responsive app experience all required careful iteration. Balancing depth of information with readability was also a key hurdle.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built an app that instantly connects users to history in a meaningful, interactive way. Key accomplishments include: AI-powered object recognition, structured historical insights, a personal heritage log, and an interface that makes exploring historical heritage intuitive and enjoyable.
What we learned
We gained valuable experience in AI integration and user-centered design. Most importantly, we learned how to present complex historical information in a way that is accurate, engaging, and accessible, helping users connect with humanity’s shared past.
What's next for Historai
We plan to improve translation and recognition capabilities, expand the range of heritage objects, and add social features that allow users to share discoveries. Our goal is to make Historai the go-to companion for anyone curious about the stories behind the world around them.
