HireWise: Making Every Return Trip Count

HireWise is an AI copilot for ride-hailing drivers in Sri Lanka. It helps a driver earn income on the return leg of a journey while keeping track of a personal schedule, so work fits around family duties, other jobs and fixed commitments rather than competing with them.

The problem Many drivers, especially part-timers, face the same dilemma. A long trip may pay well, but if it ends in a quiet area the driver must travel home empty, burning fuel and time with no income. Others must be back by a set hour for lunch, a school pickup or another shift, yet incoming offers send them in random directions. Most drivers also do not know their true running cost per kilometre, so a trip that looks profitable can quietly lose money.

Our solution The driver starts by describing the shift in plain English, for example: four hours available, Rs. 4,500 net profit needed, home in Moratuwa by 1:00 PM. HireWise turns this into structured goals: start point, home zone, available hours, income target and deadline.

Next, the driver enters litres of fuel, kilometres driven and fuel price. The app calculates the car’s real fuel economy and cost per kilometre, replacing optimistic factory figures with real numbers.

As ride offers appear, the agent evaluates each one. It estimates net profit after fuel, the likelihood of finding a passenger near the drop-off zone for the return journey, the cost of an empty drive home, and whether the driver can still arrive before the deadline. It then recommends Accept, Decline or Wait, with a clear explanation. A traffic-heavy trip can still be accepted when a surge bonus covers the delay. The driver always makes the final decision.

A live tracker shows running net profit, time used and estimated time home, so the driver can see at a glance whether the plan is on track. A comparison feature replays the same offers for a driver who always takes the highest fare and for HireWise, showing the difference in earnings and arrival time.

Fairness and responsibility The agent never advises declining a trip simply because of traffic, and never encourages cancelling an accepted ride. When the driver is waiting, it suggests moving toward zones with higher demand, which can also help balance supply across the city.

How it is built HireWise is written in Jac. The city is modelled as a graph: zones are nodes, and roads are edges carrying distance and time-of-day traffic factors. Jac’s byLLM feature, powered by Gemini, parses the driver’s goals and writes the explanations, while all financial and distance calculations run in plain code for reliability. Jac’s built-in authentication handles accounts.

Honesty note All data in this demonstration, including zones, fares, offers, traffic and demand, is simulated and labelled as such. HireWise does not connect to Uber, PickMe or any live service.

What next Future versions could add live traffic, a passenger route planner, voice commands and electric-vehicle battery awareness. HireWise turns every empty return into an opportunity.
