Finding reliable freelance opportunities can be difficult for beginners, while clients often struggle to discover suitable talent for their projects. We wanted to build a platform that makes this process more structured, accessible, and efficient.
This idea led us to HireGenie, an AI-integrated freelance marketplace designed to connect clients and freelancers through a single platform.
What is HireGenie?
HireGenie is a full-stack freelance marketplace where users can create profiles, post jobs, discover opportunities, and manage applications through a centralized platform.
The project focuses on combining a modern web experience with a scalable backend architecture and AI-powered functionality.
How We Built It
HireGenie was developed using:
- Python for backend development
- Django for the web application framework
- Django REST Framework (DRF) for REST API development
- JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3 for the frontend
- PostgreSQL for database management
- JWT authentication for secure authentication and user access
- AI API integration for AI-powered functionality

Challenges We Faced
One of the main challenges was designing the backend so that different marketplace workflows could work together without making the application difficult to maintain.
We also had to handle authentication, database relationships, API communication, and frontend-backend integration while keeping the architecture flexible for future features.
Another challenge was integrating AI functionality into a practical marketplace workflow instead of treating AI as a separate feature.
What We Learned
Building HireGenie helped us strengthen our understanding of Django, Django REST Framework, REST APIs, authentication, database design, frontend-backend integration, and AI API integration.
We also learned how important application architecture is when building a platform with multiple user workflows and interconnected features.
What's Next
We plan to continue improving HireGenie by expanding its AI capabilities, improving intelligent freelancer-job matching, enhancing the user experience, and adding more features that make freelance collaboration easier and more efficient.
