As a BCA student applying to internships, I spent weeks manually reading job descriptions, writing personalized cold emails, and guessing whether my resume even matched what recruiters wanted. I realized this problem doesn't just affect me — every student job hunter faces the same repetitive, low-feedback grind. I wanted to build the tool I wish I had: an AI copilot that turns job hunting from guesswork into a system.
What it does
HireGenie is an AI-powered career copilot with four core features:
- Resume-JD Match Score — Paste your resume and a job description, and HireGenie instantly scores how well you fit, highlighting missing skills and keywords.
- Auto Cold-Email Generator — Enter a company and role, and get a personalized, human-sounding outreach email in seconds.
- AI Interview Prep Bot — Enter a job role and get likely interview questions with model answers, tailored to that role.
- Application Tracker Dashboard — Track every company you've reached out to, their status, and follow-up dates in one place.
How I built it
HireGenie is built with Django for the backend and core logic, MySQL for data storage (tracking applications, resumes, and job descriptions), and an AI API (LLM-based) for resume matching, email generation, and interview question generation. The frontend uses HTML/CSS/JavaScript for a clean, functional dashboard experience.
Challenges I ran into
- Designing prompts that reliably produce structured, useful output from the AI model (not just generic text)
- Balancing scope with the hackathon timeline — deciding which features to build first vs. keep simple
- Making the match-scoring logic feel genuinely useful rather than a gimmick
Accomplishments I'm proud of
Building a tool that solves a real problem I face myself, and combining four distinct AI-assisted features into one coherent workflow rather than a single-feature demo.
What I learned
Practical experience integrating AI APIs into a Django application, structuring prompts for consistent output, and designing a full user workflow rather than an isolated feature.
What's next for HireGenie
- Auto-apply integration with job boards
- Browser extension for one-click resume matching on any job posting
- Analytics on which cold-email styles get the most responses ## What we learned
