Inspiration
After brainstorming and shooting ideas back and forth we noticed that we were gravitating towards the theme of security as we saw many practical applications. We finally decided to come up with a solution that would benefit us greatly and we started trying to optimize the process of applying to jobs. Then, inspiration struck! We saw great potential in combining the basic principles of Tinder with applying to jobs. Further details to come..
What it does
Our mobile app, Hired or Fired, functions much like Tinder. As an employee looking for jobs, you have the possibility to swipe right or left (interested or not) on job postings. On the main page (swiping), there are two "tabs". One containing recommended job postings that our very bright and accurate machine learning algorithm curated for you, in terms of jobs where most chances of matching with (getting an interview!). The second contains all job postings in a specified area from your address which you can filter based on what you like. In terms of what is actually displayed, when looking through jobs you will see the following info: Job Title, Company, Experience and Education Required, and the option to see more. This will show you the full job posting and then you can decide whether to swipe right (which is equivalent to applying for a job). The app also has access for recruiters. Recruiters will have a company account and can post their openings. They also swipe right or left, but they do it on employees. The people who "liked" their job will be displayed first.
... Or so this is what it was supposed to do. In a perfect world, these 24 hours could last for 24 weeks and we would have made everything functional and well designed.
In practice, our app has a login and register page. The are not gated yet:( but they do contain the necessary fields. We also have the main page where employees can swipe on jobs, python functions for the database and a user profile page. We didn't even get to do anything on the recruiter's end, unfortunately. We also have some formulas for calculating job recommendation as well as a page displaying the top 10 jobs for a user.
How we built it
For the the front end we used react-native and python for the back end.
Challenges we ran into
We realized that our project was indeed quite ambitious. As stated before, we didn't even mange to do a fraction of what we set out to do, but we're still proud regardless.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The friendships we made along the way.
What we learned
We actually learned a lot about mobile development as it was a new topic for most of us. We also learned that we can accomplish quite a lot in a short time frame if we set our minds to it. But most importantly we learned about ourselves and the beauty of teamwork!
What's next for Hired or Fired
We believe we are sitting on a pretty good idea and are planning to develop further on it. Hopefully, in the future we could implement all the features we planned out to do, as well as, adding more features based on recruiter feedback.
