Inspiration
The highest-profile story of 3-D printing to date concerns the manufacture of respirator valves for a hospital in Italy. Prototyped and finalised in short order, the valves have been put to use to help patients in a busy Italian hospital breathe through their symptoms. Such a case highlights some of the biggest advantages of 3-D printing during this crisis — namely point-of-demand manufacturing and a fast turnaround. That fast turnaround applies not only to the speed of additive manufacturing, but the speed with which the community has rallied around the technology to bring about novel solutions for this novel coronavirus outbreak. Many groups of volunteers have created solutions that facilitate the urgent demand for medical supplies with available digital manufacturing capabilities, or created medical products based on available designs. But most of them did not scale as there was a lack of governance and quality control.
GOALS
HIPPO MAKES focusses on accelerating the adoption of digital manufacturing technologies, by making it healthcare proof. HIPPO MAKES is a community platform for digital manufacturing in the healthcare industry. Our mission is to foster collaboration within our sector to meet the needs of the healthcare sector and the digital manufacturing manufacturing community. HIPPO MAKES is a central provisioner of digital manufacturing data and designs for the decentralised production of medical products. To make these designs eligible for medical purposes, we joined forces with academia and MDR approved organisations. HIPPO MAKES focusses on accelerating the development of open source designs, which helps us to build scalable additive production chains. Our mission could not be clearer than it is today, given the ongoing COVID 19 crisis and the impending supply shortages across the continent. We believe that this storage will play a critical role in meeting the needs of workers at the forefront of the healthcare industry.
What it does
HIPPO MAKES provides hosting for medical digital manufacturing designs and offers version and quality control. It provides networking functions such as community groups, that foster collaboration between the users that can optimise and control designs for medical use. A user must create an account in order to contribute content to the site, but public repositories can be browsed and downloaded by anyone. The unique open collaboration fosters and accelerates innovation that can safe human life's. HIPO MAKES ensures the central provision of digital manufacturing data and designs for the decentralised production of medical products using digital manufacturing services.
How we built it
The MVP was built with React/Next.js, backed by AWS Amplify, some Bootstrap and an awesome team!
Challenges we ran into
- As powerful as Amplify is, it seems to change rather quickly so that documentation and help on the web is quickly outdated. Still it helped a lot and speed up the development.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
- Evolving a product vision in such a short time period
- Confirmation from leading academic institutes that the initial idea is very valuable and will get further support
- Building an Ad-Hoc Team from 6 different cities that seamlessly worked together

- Next.js is really helpful in bootstrapping a React application
What's next for HIPPO MAKES
- We will continue together with some academic partners to build this prototype into an MVP
- Local policies make it hard to innovate as people resist change
