Inspiration

Hinga started from something we see around us: farmers work extremely hard, but having access to the right information at the right time can still be difficult.

A farmer may know how to work their land, but questions can still come up: When should I plant? What is affecting my crop? What will the weather be like? Where can I find reliable farming advice? And where can I sell my harvest?

We wanted to use technology to make these answers easier to find.

That is how Hinga was born with the idea of putting useful agricultural information and tools in one simple platform for farmers.

What it does

Hinga is a smart agriculture platform that helps farmers make better-informed decisions.

Farmers can provide information about their location and crops and access useful services such as:

  • Farming and crop-management information
  • Weather updates and alerts
  • AI-assisted crop problem identification
  • Agricultural market information
  • Personalized farming recommendations

Our goal is to make Hinga feel like a digital farming companion rather than another complicated technology platform.

How we built it

We are building Hinga as a mobile first platform so that it can be accessible to farmers using smartphones.

The application uses React Native and TypeScript on the frontend, with Python and FastAPI powering the backend. We use PostgreSQL for storing farmer and agricultural data.

For the intelligent parts of the platform, we are exploring Python, PyTorch, and computer vision models that can help analyze crop images and provide useful information.

We are also designing Hinga to work with external services such as weather and location APIs so that the information provided to farmers can be more relevant to their actual situation.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges is making sure Hinga solves a real farming problem rather than simply adding technology for the sake of technology.

Farmers have different crops, locations, levels of technical experience, and access to devices and internet connectivity. Because of this, we have to think carefully about simplicity and accessibility.

Another challenge is agricultural data. AI systems need reliable and relevant data, but agricultural conditions can vary significantly between regions. We therefore need to continuously improve our data and models while making sure that recommendations are responsible and useful.

We also have to balance what we want Hinga to become in the future with what we can realistically build as an MVP.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that Hinga has developed from an idea into a clear product direction.

We have identified a real problem, defined our target users, designed the core platform, and developed a realistic MVP that we can actually build and demonstrate.

We are especially proud of the bigger vision behind Hinga. We are not only thinking about an app for farmers; we are thinking about how technology can eventually connect farmers with agricultural knowledge, experts, markets, cooperatives, and opportunities.

Most importantly, we are building Hinga from Rwanda, with the intention of solving problems that are relevant to our own communities.

What we learned

One of the biggest things we have learned is that building technology is not only about writing code.

A good product starts by understanding the people who will use it.

We learned that we need to focus on the farmer's actual experience, keep the platform simple, validate our assumptions, and build features based on real needs.

We also learned that AI is most useful when it supports people rather than simply being added because it sounds impressive.

What's next for Hinga

Our next step is to build and test the Hinga MVP with real users.

We want to start with the core features: farmer profiles, crop information, weather updates, AI-assisted crop analysis, and agricultural market information.

After testing the MVP, we want to learn directly from farmers and improve the platform based on their feedback.

In the longer term, we want Hinga to become a larger agricultural ecosystem connecting farmers, agricultural experts, cooperatives, suppliers, and markets

We are starting in Rwanda, but our vision is to eventually take Hinga beyond Rwanda and build technology that can support farmers across Africa.

Hinga is not just about building an agriculture app. It is about making useful information easier for farmers to access, understand, and use.
