Inspiration
Getting a HIIT workout means opening up YouTube, searching for "HIIT", scrolling through a bunch of videos, the finally clicking one based on vibes. We wanted something simpler: HIIT workouts generated with the push of a button.
What it does
HIITplay creates 15–30 minute bodyweight workouts with warmups, cued instructions, countdowns, music, and exercise demos. All you need to do is pick a workout length and press play.
How we built it
We built a workout planner around a curated exercise library, then combined voice clips, music, and exercise videos into guided sessions. We even looked at existing HIIT research to find patterns for optimum workout durations, tempo, and exercises.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the voice cues, countdowns, and music to stay in sync was harder than expected—especially when someone paused or skipped ahead. Also creating the 2D style animations for 180+ exercises was VERY difficult. AI is REALLY bad at complex movements in 2D space.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a complete HIIT experience from synthesized HIIT research. We also created visuals to help users understand how to do certain moves (after researching them on YouTube).
What we learned
Turns out simple isn't always so simple. Even though there are functionally only two screens in the app, there's so many things that need to go right behind the scenes.
What's next for HIITplay
Finish and polish the native iPhone app, learn from people using it, and expand the exercise library. Keep making it easier to go from “I should work out” to actually starting. Hopefully replace the generated images with real exercise videos from a real person.
