Inspiration
My friend, Josiah, and I had our start around 6 years ago in Rec Room. Over there, we amassed millions of visits and hundreds of thousands of subscribers. So when we saw this contest, we thought, 'What better time to give it a shot?' Because how different could it really be? Surprise to no one, very different.
We started this project with a vivid picture in mind. Doodle, a charades-like game with a paintbrush that can draw in 3d space. The paintbrush used the trail gizmo to allow players to draw lines in 3d space. Now, this didn't seem like such a big project in the concepting stage, but we failed to consider that I, the programmer, have never touched typescript in my life.
Josiah was pretty comfortable since he was using the tools he's always known: blender, substance painter, etc. That's why the art looks as good as it does. I, on the other hand, overestimated my ability to learn a programming language, and make an entire game in it in an engine I've never even heard of, all in the span on 4 weeks.
around 4 days before the deadline, I finally came to the conclusion that I could not finish the code for this project.... but that doesn't mean we gave up. We wouldn't let this get us down. We scoped down the project and pivoted into something that we knew we could make. HighPoint, a social experience where people can relax.
Regardless of the original idea, we are proud of what we made. We pushed our limits and made something that we wouldn't have been able to make just one month ago.
Moving forward, we see ourselves returning to horizon to create our original vision. We still have the passion in our hearts to make the game that we formed in our heads early in development.
