Inspiration

Our team was inspired by the idea of creating a safety device for children that could both help them express their emotions and protect them from environmental risks like UV exposure. We wanted something simple, wearable, and helpful in real life.

What it does

High UV Alert is a wearable device that detects UV intensity and alerts children if conditions are safe, cautionary, or dangerous. It displays clear messages and colors on an OLED screen, helping kids understand when they need protection from the sun.

How we built it

We used an Arduino Nano, an OLED display, and a UV/temperature sensor to detect environmental conditions. The system processes the sensor data and outputs easy-to-understand messages like “Safe,” “Caution,” or “Danger.” The display provides real-time feedback using text and visual cues.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, we tried to combine a heart rate sensor with mood detection, showing BPM and emotional states like calm or stressed. However, we had difficulty stabilizing the heart sensor readings and timing, which made the system unreliable. Due to time constraints, we decided to focus on the UV alert system that was working consistently.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a working wearable that provides real-time UV feedback in a simple and understandable way. We’re proud that we adapted quickly, simplified our idea, and still delivered a functional and meaningful project.

What we learned

We learned how to work with sensors, process real-time data, and display it effectively. We also learned the importance of simplifying ideas during a hackathon and focusing on what works rather than trying to do too much at once.

What's next for High UV Alert

In the future, we want to reintroduce emotion detection with improved sensors and algorithms, combine multiple safety features into one device, and make the wearable smaller and more user-friendly for everyday use.
