Inspiration
As a group of 4 beginner coders, one of our biggest struggles in our short lives has been to find educational websites and resources to aid us in our quests for knowledge. This inspired us to create a website that provides easy access to some of the best educational resources on the web!
What it does
Our website contains a home page detailing instructions that will lead to a quiz. This quiz provides the reader with a personalized display of educational resources based on their responses to the quiz. We also have a separate resource page with the most important resources we've compiled to allow users the freedom to explore. Additionally, we have a fun "contact us" page!
How we built it
We used html5 and CSS to build the basic website and used JavaScript to build the quiz and other elements.
Challenges we ran into
Switching between CSS and html5 tripped us up a couple times due to the differences in format. As 3/4 members have never coded a website and all of us were new to JavaScript, being able to create in html5 and JavaScript was a learning process. We also struggled in the beginning with inserting images into our website in the correct formatting, but were eventually able to figure it out.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud that we were able to pull together a fully-functional website at our very first Hackathon!
What we learned
First and foremost, we of course deepened our knowledge of the languages of html5, CSS, and JavaScript. We also learned how to work around issues that arose while coding by combing through our code step-by-step, using outside resources, or finding workarounds. Last but certainly not least, we learned how to persevere, collaborate, and chug coffee to stay awake :)
What's next for Education Resource Finder
We would love to improve the number of steps in our quiz and go into more detail, such as what subject the user would like to learn, whether they are willing to pay, etc. We would also have liked to add more resources to our website to allow for an even wider variety of sources to be presented. If we had more time, we finally would work on improving our website design.
