Inspiration

Growing mental health concerns exist in the construction industry because it ranks second highest in suicide rates among major industries. Therefore, HIFI was born out of a shared passion for promoting mental well-being and breaking the stigma against construction workers seeking support for their mental health. Our team sought to recognize the challenges faced by construction workers by focusing on alleviating their work-related stress. We believe in the need for a dedicated platform to support these hardworking individuals. We took major influence over Procore's article on the subject which they discuss thoroughly, which was very beneficial for our research.

What it does

HIFI is a website offering recommendations for alleviating stress as it pertains to construction work. It includes a responsive, caring chatbot and the use of machine learning algorithms to provide necessary aid to those in need.

How we built it

We utilized HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create the front, Tensorflow, to create a Feed Foward Neural Network, data from Weather API and IP API to pull data from the user in a nonintrusive manner, and Flask to manage the backend.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was finding the best way to approach mental health support. We researched methods to alleviate the stress that construction workers often experience and make the site user-friendly to ensure that workers would find the site accessible. We also had to find a way to not only create a recommendation algorithm with a team of beginners but also make one that would truly help those in need.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our research and provision of mental health resources to an underrepresented group of people. Furthermore, we have all grown in many areas, including communication and teamwork.

What we learned

We learned how to be more sensible to the needs of others. We learned how to learn. We learned how to not only work but also deliver as a team.

What's next for HIFI

We plan to create more AI-driven tools to provide personalized support. In addition, we plan to reach out to unions and safety organizations to see if we can learn more about the problems that face construction workers. We believe every worker should be able to prioritize their health before their work.
