Inspiration

In a big city such as Toronto, our teammates noticed the difficulty in finding less well-known businesses and events. We also noticed many of these unique businesses suffering from this lack of awareness around them - with many very cool businesses closing down, and events being canceled. It was clear to us that there was a big gap between consumers and these local businesses/events, which is why we decided to dedicate our project to closing the gap.

What it does

Hidden Gems features local small businesses, cool locations, as well as events happening in the city on a map. It also shows events happening in the city on a timeline - making users aware of them, and giving them time to plan their trip. As well, we feature news stories and articles on our website to highlight these "hidden gems".

How we built it

We built this website on a collaborative coding software called JSfiddle. We used HTML, CSS, and Javascript to build this website.

Challenges we ran into

None of us knew how to make a website - we had to learn everything from scratch which was very difficult but rewarding. Besides this, we had a lot of difficulty with the map - from creating it, to embedding it into our website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we actually got around to creating a website - which is new for us all.

What we learned

We learned how to work collaboratively with time constraints and conflicting schedules, as well as working on the same piece of code without messing another person's code up.

What's next for Hidden Gems

In the short term, we plan on doing some major improvements to our website, as it is pretty barebones at the moment. In the long term, we plan to expand to other cities, and monetize our platform.
