Inspiration

Our inspiration for Her Haven Map stemmed from the urgent need for safer environments for girls. In an age where safety is a growing concern, we wanted to create a solution that empowers women to navigate their surroundings confidently and share their experiences with others.

What it does

Her Haven Map is a web-based platform that allows users to rate and review places based on their safety levels for girls. Users can contribute their insights, view others' ratings, and access an interactive map that highlights safe and unsafe areas.

How we built it

We built the application using Django for the backend, along with Python for logic, HTML and CSS for the frontend, and JavaScript for interactivity. To enhance our mapping capabilities, we integrated the Mapbox API, allowing users to visualize safety data in real time.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first time using mapping technology, and we encountered a learning curve with Mapbox. Additionally, it was our first experience collaborating as a team, which presented challenges in communication and coordination.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a functional prototype of the platform, implemented user authentication, and integrated Mapbox for dynamic mapping. We’re proud of our ability to work together as a team, overcoming technical challenges to deliver a valuable resource for our community.

What we learned

We learned how to effectively use Mapbox, improved our collaboration skills, and gained a deeper understanding of web development technologies. This project also taught us the importance of user feedback in creating a more robust application.

What's next for Her HavenMap

Moving forward, we aim to enhance our platform by incorporating more user features, such as a mobile version of the app and additional safety resources. We also plan to expand our outreach to ensure more girls can benefit from our platform and gather feedback to continually improve our service.
