Inspiration

By any chance have you seen food on campus being thrown away on mass? RSO's, Large & Small Scale Events, when both refuse to take their food out due to too much food left over, janitors have to come and compost it, which is policy. There have been thousands of instances of such throughout the UW campus. Perhaps that is one approach to get rid of the food, however, it is our belief that it is not the best. Hungry Huskies solves this issue though the simple implementation of a web signup service.

What it does

Hungry Huskies allows every husky to signs up, which can be students, staff and/or teachers, who will get notified the next time someone has extra food lying around. It allows the same population to send out notifications whenever they have extra food. The scale of operations can be from student to student, HFS to student, Restaurants left overs pick-ups or even exchanges between neighbours. Users are also accompanied by a AI chatbot which they can use if they are unsure the food they have is enough/ok to give away. Individuals who don't want notifications can also just look at a summary of all the current live food sites that are providing food, as well, have access to campus resources such as food bank, emergency husky funds, etc. right on the landing page.

How we built it

We took advantage of HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Python, SQL, Flask for the functionality of our whole webdev project and Python anywhere to host the app online. We additionally got the chance to utilize openai's api for our chatbot and google's clouds sheets api and gmail api to best populate and interact with notification and database management. We also utilized boot straps, among other notable open-source frameworks.

Challenges we ran into

Having no prior experience with database implementation in webdev, the largest challenge we unfortunately ran into was being unable to implement our database for the longest time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Hungry Huskies provides a unique outlook at the food waste and hunger crisis for huskies on campus. It leverages the plethora of food available in the college eco-system and makes the best case use out of it. Feeding huskies, significantly reducing waste and keeping our population healthy with zero-hunger and access to nutritious food for those who need it.

What's next for Hungry Huskies

The future of Hungry Huskies will include enhancing the user functionality, adding features to taylor better insight into the user's specific goals and implement on feedback proactively, one day letting UW take control of the website to enforce TRUST. Unfortunately, there are a lot of policies in place on campus pushing a halt to our efforts at harmonizing this system for fellow huskies, moving forward we look forward to tackle such policies with grit and further explore ways to enhance the fellow husky experience on campus!
