Inspiration
The current issue : Singapore Government is introducing a new scheme to increase in paternity leave for dads in July 2017. Dads will be set to get more time off from work to look after their newborns, under a slew of new measures in order to increase the involvement of dads in child-caring (under Government Paid Paternity Leave scheme). Our app will actually compliment the government's effort and help the dads' to find the best way to be more involved in child-caring.
What it does
Hey Daddy is a web-app platform designed for dads as a one-stop solution of child-caring. The target audiences are Singaporean Dads or double-income families.
How we built it
The website design has a similar style to Pinterest. It has clean design and easy to navigate menu. The members collaboration is done through Github repository. The front-end is developed using Bootstrap Framework (HTML+CSS+JavaScript+JQuery). It is currently being hosted on the external server (InMotion hosting). The front-end is accessible here: link.
The back-end system is developed using PHP Framework with MySQL database. The web content is dynamic and easy to update for people with no coding skills at all with the dashboard being developed. The admin can login to the dashboard link --- (test username: admin, password: admin). They can add, edit and delete the contents though this dashboard.
There are third party tools being used in the development as well, such email. When the users post a message through contact page -- link, there will be email sent to heydaddycares@gmail.com to notify the admin about the message.
Challenges we ran into
It was difficult to find a time to meet and discuss. Additionally, the website can definitely be improved in terms of functionality or design. It is mainly because of the lack of time that both of us had (since both of us are currently working full-time), that we are unable to implement all the features we had in mind.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have successfully developed a website, which is currently hosted online and available for community. Through our web-app, we hope to inspire people that everybody can code and develop an app, if they continuously learnt and dedicated their time into the learning phase.
What we learned
In terms of technology, we learnt how to apply the computational thinking to implementation both on mobile and web development. Besides that, we also learnt on how to solve a real-life problem from the users' perspective and entrepreneurship skill.
What's next for Hey Daddy
Short Term : creation of community, engage readers and encourage users' contribution. Long Term : collaboration with community center or event organizers, sponsorships and partnership with Governmental Agencies such as Families for Life
