Hey-Borhood

Loneliness is a major cause for depression among elderlies due to them feeling isolated from their community. Our App, Hey-Borhood, connects Hey-Bors (volunteers) with elderlies to communicate online.

Inspiration

We have a local volunteer place that matches young people with elderlies living in nursing homes to meet up during the holidays. We thought this was a great idea, but we noticed that it didn't have an online platform. We realized the potential social impact this could have on people that are not mobile but are willing to connect with people online.

What it does

The main feature of this app would be an accessible chatbox that matches elderly people and Hey-Bors to each other to allow for easy and effortless communication with one another.

How we built it

We used Java, JavaFX, Maven, and FXML Scene Builder for the coding portion of the app.

We also used Canva to create our images for the app.

We used GitHub as version control for our app.

Challenges we ran into

When we first started, we had problem rendering the images with Scene Builder. Another problem we had was creating event handlers for the "Create Account" button. We initially thought we would have different scenes for each image, but eventually settled on one FXML scene because it made everything simpler by having one controller class.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to have a complete app demo from start to finish in just one day. All of our team members spent their whole Saturday for this app and we all applauded that we finished it after 10 hours of sacrifice!

What we learned

We learned how to use github with collaborators. We also learned how to use scene builder and FXML after watching a lot of youtube tutorials and guides.

What's next for Hey-borhood

We hope to improve upon this app, and add more features such as: Verifying user's info to make this app a safer place because we are aware of issues such as elder abuse in nursing homes, and don't want any Hey-Bors (volunteers) using our app to target vulnerable populations.
