About Hestia
Inspiration
The idea for Hestia came from personal experience with stove-related burns and from learning how many injuries and household fires are caused by unattended cooking. We wanted to create a solution that could improve kitchen safety without requiring people to replace their existing appliances.
What it does
Hestia is a smart safety add-on for existing stoves. It provides real-time monitoring, vision-based proximity detection, remote stove deactivation, and instant alerts to help prevent accidents before they occur. The system is designed to enhance safety while remaining simple and accessible for everyday users.
How we built it
We combined custom 3D-printed hardware with a software platform that connects sensors, monitoring systems, and user controls. The project includes custom peripheral devices, a backend server for communication and data management, and a mobile interface that allows users to receive alerts and manage safety settings remotely.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was configuring and deploying backend infrastructure and cloud servers. Ensuring reliable communication between devices, servers, and the user interface required significant troubleshooting and integration work. We also had to balance functionality with a design that could be be adapted to different stove models.
Accomplishments that we're proud of

What we learned
Through this project, we learned how to strategically implement APIs and backend services in a connected device ecosystem. We also gained experience designing and integrating custom peripheral hardware, managing cloud infrastructure, and building reliable communication between multiple system components.
What's next for Hestia
Our next goal is to refine the design so it becomes truly modular and compatible with a wider range of stove models. By improving ease of installation, reliability, and scalability, we hope to expand protection coverage and help more households prevent stove-related accidents.
