Inspiration

HerVoice was inspired to be founded through the story of Annie from Kampala, Uganda. Annie is representative of many women who are kept silent by fear against harassment or violence. This victim, though accomplished in her profession, suffered under the nightmare of continual harassment at work and, even worse, under the unbearable pressure of having no place to safely report such incidents. Her story is by no means singular-it epitomizes lived realities for millions of women across Africa. Statistics have shown that one out of every three African women is a victim of gender-based violence, 40 percent of harassment cases are ever reported, 73 percent of women face digital harassment, and 82 percent feel unsafe in public places. These figures are just mere numbers, but lives and problems that all need solutions. Feeling the urge for change, we formed HerVoice to be that chasm between silence and action by giving them a safe place to speak, seek support, and find resources.

What it does

It offers secure, anonymous reporting through which users can document incidents, track cases, and provide evidence with complete anonymity. It also connects women to location-based support services, 24/7 AI-powered assistance, immediate crisis response, emotional support, and safety planning. It provides access to legal advice, counseling services, support groups, and emergency contact information for women. Further, HerVoice assists in mapping harasser patterns through data insights, helps understand hotspots, and fosters better policies. It marries high-end technology with a sensitive and empathetic design, empowering women in situations and leading them to the right kind of assistance.

How we built it

HerVoice has been designed to be trauma-informed and user-centered, putting a great deal of consideration into ensuring that the platform is intuitive and safe for its users. Core technologies involved in making this web interface include Python and Streamlit; SQLite, for secure light data storage; Google's Gemini AI for empathetic support around the clock; Plotly to visualize actionable insights; and Geopy to enable location-based services. In the process of its development, we have paid close attention to user privacy and security by adding features that protect identities and sensitive information. The intuitive interface makes this platform accessible and easy to use, even by women coming from very diverse backgrounds, sometimes in crisis situations.

Challenges we ran into

Most of the development of HerVoice came with a lot of challenges both on technical and ethical levels. First, there was the building of secure and anonymous reporting, which was hard to achieve, not to mention training AI to respond in a sensitive and empathetic manner. It was also necessary to create an offline functionality for better service in regions with poor internet connectivity, which made matters even more complicated. Data privacy had to be managed at all points so that user information would not be compromised. Among these were ethical concerns: sensitive feature design for trauma-informed content, the protection of user identities, and cultural sensitivity for diversified regions. Further, the most challenging tasks were handling sensitive information with care and designing AI responses that truly aligned with the supportive mission of the platform.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We strive to bring more functionality and impacts into one platform. HerVoice allows users to report in a safe and anonymous environment, AI Companion support is available 24/7, and a trauma-informed interface that puts the user's comfort and safety first. The platform incorporates advanced analytics for actionable insights into advocacy and resource allocation. Most importantly, we have empowered women with reporting tools that are easily accessible, a strong network of support, and data-driven advocacy tools to make a dent in the reform that would bring about change. Accordingly, by integrating technology with empathy, we have made sure to take one more major step toward helping put an end to harassment and violence against women.

What we learned

It was a learning curve indeed, which improved our technical knowledge, social awareness, and project management skills. Technically, this included best practices in AI integrations for sensitive contexts, implementation of security, and optimization of the database to ensure the platform is robust yet user-friendly. Socially, we have learned about trauma-informed development, cultural competency, and how to integrate diverse support services. Those lessons have been invaluable in developing a platform that would resonate with its audience and answer their needs in the best possible way. In terms of project management, we further developed our skills in prioritizing features, managing resources, and measuring impact to ensure that the platform-while growing for the future-remains focused on its mission.

What's next for HerVoice

The vision for HerVoice keeps increasing day by day, with a few major milestones it wishes to achieve in the future. Improvement of the platform through multilingual options, a dedicated mobile application, and offline reporting are important changes they want to bring about to ensure that women from regions with bad or no access to the internet can also be benefited. Predictive analytics will further help in prevention by forecasting high-risk situations. Our strategy for scaling up includes partnering with NGOs and advocacy groups, expanding into coverage to underserved regions, and building out an API ecosystem for seamless integrations with other platforms. We will launch a community outreach and support program. Sustainability remains key in grant funding, establishing partnerships, and measurement of social impact.
