Inspiration
Women can face unsafe situations where every second matters. We wanted to create a simple safety companion that can help users recognize potential threats, quickly access emergency tools, and stay connected when they need support.
HerShield builds on the open-source SheGuard project and adapts its women’s safety concept for the Tech For Her challenge.
What it does
HerShield is an AI-powered women’s safety companion designed to provide quick access to essential safety features.
Key capabilities include:
- AI-assisted threat detection
- Emergency SOS functionality
- Emergency contact management
- Voice/text-based interaction
- Safety-focused alerts and guidance
- A responsive interface designed for quick access during stressful situations
How we built it
HerShield is based on the open-source SheGuard project. The project uses a modern web application stack with React and Vite, together with AI capabilities and browser-based speech features.
We used GenSpark as required by the hackathon to develop and present the solution. We also documented the open-source foundation and AI tools used in the project.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was designing a safety experience that is useful without becoming complicated. Emergency features need to be easy to find and understand, especially when a user may be stressed or under pressure.
We also had to consider privacy, responsible AI use, reliability, and the limitations of automated threat detection.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working women’s safety prototype
- Integrated AI-assisted safety functionality
- Created an interface focused on quick access to emergency features
- Combined threat detection with emergency support tools
- Adapted an existing open-source foundation into a hackathon-focused solution
- Kept privacy and responsible use in mind throughout the project
What we learned
We learned that safety applications require more than just technical functionality. The interface, accessibility, privacy, reliability, and clarity of emergency actions are equally important.
We also learned how open-source projects can provide a strong foundation for developing and experimenting with new ideas while respecting the original project's license and contributors.
What's next for HerShield
Future versions of HerShield could include:
- More advanced on-device threat detection
- Improved voice-triggered emergency assistance
- Safer route and location-aware features
- Multilingual support
- Better offline capabilities
- More customizable emergency workflows
- Additional privacy-focused safety features
