Inspiration
The inspiration for this project came from a conversation with my friend, who recently finished an internship in finance at a bank. She expressed how realistic the portrayal of finance as a man's world was, and how out of place she felt. I understood her completely as I experienced the same thing at first in engineering.
What it does
The main idea for this project is to destigmatize the finance industry for women and break down the barriers to entry. It provides a space for women to inquire about everything finance, even questions they felt embarrassed to ask.
How we built it
Herpath was primarily built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to model the website's core concept.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge initially was that I attempted to integrate all the website functionality fully, but this proved to be too taxing for one person. I enjoyed the challenge of pushing myself to my work limits and attempting to complete as much as possible within a deadline.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of completing the website functionality, despite how many times I messed up the JavaScript. I'm proud of the fact that when I realized I couldn't finish my initial plan, I was able to pick back up and create a backup plan.
What we learned
I did a lot of research on the barriers to entry to finance and learned that this problem goes deeper than I initially thought. There is a lack of women occupying higher-level finance jobs as as a result, many women don't have mentors who push them to achieve more. This further continues the cycle. On the technological side, I learnt how to model back-end functionality with JavaScript.
What's next for HerPath
Hopefully, we can continue to build this site and partner with companies willing to host events and supply female mentors for the next generation. There is a lot of growing and community involvement needed for this project, but I believe it is something that is needed.
