Inspiration

As we move forward, the world is still grappling with women's discrimination happening in every parts of the world. While some progress has been made in reducing the gender gap in education and employment, the data indicates that ender inequality is one of the major cause and effect of hunger and poverty. Women and girls still continue to face discrimination and violence in every part of the world. In addition, according to UN Women report, women make two-thirds of the world's illiterate people. crises. In most countries, women in rural areas who work for wages are more likely than men to hold seasonal, part-time and low-wage jobs. Through this website, I want to provide people our there to be able to support and empower each other however they can.

The website has five different sections: Home Page, Get Involved, Support, Books and WOMENtorship. Heroine enables users to support and benefit from different resources, news and network. The Home Page **gets the latest news related to women empowerment from different news media and provides the link to their details. **Get Involved lists non-governmental organizations working to secure women's human rights. These organizations need funding support to continue their effort towards creating an equitable society where women are empowered. Users can use this section of the website to find out more about these companies and contribute what they can. Support provides a list of women owned companies. It is no secret that female entrepreneurs face numerous barriers on their road to success. From this page, users can get inspired by the endless contributions and accomplishments entrepreneur women have made. We can also uplift one another as we spotlight the incredible women in this world and support their endeavors. Books recommends and lists books shelved as women empowerment on Goodreads. Users can navigate through this page to look for the latest and highly rated books that can empower them. WOMENtorship was designed to connect volunteer mentors and mentees to help guide and inspire other women in their endeavors. A mentor can help guide a lesser experienced person in their professional endeavors.

How we built it

The UI is designed by HTML and CSS. To make the pages easy-to-navigate, and aesthetically appealing I used bootstrap and tailwind css framework. I also used jquery and ajax to handle different functions in my javascript code. I used python for the backend with Beautiful Soup python package, Requests library and News API.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge that I run into was using the news api. Because, the free version of the api wasn't allowing some functionalities in javascript any longer, I had to find a way around with python.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of the aesthetic and functionality of the website.

What we learned

I learned a lot about web development technologies, particularly how to use tailwind css and add animation(motion) to a website with javascript. I also learned how to use News api.

What's next for Heroine

The next thing for Heroine is to give users the option to subscribe to the website, so that they can get latest news about women empowerment from different sources. I hope to improve the WOMENtorship page, so that users can actually sign in and get connected with one another. I would also like to improve the UI of the website and add more contents to it.
