Inspiration

Our journey began at the MDL Designcadathon, tasked with creating a gadget that could help MDL man escape a kidnapping. We decided to integrate a rescue tool into his footwear, creating HeroHeel—a blend of superhero functionality and discreet design.

What it does

HeroHeel is a gadget intended to be a simple way for MDL man to escape a dark room where he is held captive; his hands are tied up by a rope and cannot escape. HeroHeel does this via its integrated blade that is located on the MDL acessory on the back of his shoe. This way, he can puncture through the rope and escape. The gadget also provides light so that he can see via LED lights.

How we built it

We followed the engineering design process by first sketching out our ideas. We took a while until finally settling on a gadget which goes on the back of the shoe. We were lucky enough to get MDL man's shoes himself. We split up as a group and worked on the CAD model while others worked on our pitch. We made many iterations, and finally built our final prototype on Autodesk Inventor.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges on how we would implement the blade in our gadget. We wanted to be creative while also staying within the design contraints, such as the 20x20x20cm protoype dimension limit, and safely allow MDL man to cut through the rope so that he could escape. Overall, we came up with an idea to make a sleek design that the blade is hidden in the logo instead of being retracred out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a final prototype that can be enhanced with future iterations.

What we learned

We learned to never give up when it gets tough and to work within our strengths to get things done.

What's next for HeroHeel?

We will be making the prototype with better materials!
