Heroes of Hearthwall
Inspiration
Heroes of Hearthwall was born from my passion for reimagining 2D game concepts as fully immersive XR experiences—exploring a largely untapped space where strategy and first-person action collide. I wanted the strategic depth and base defense of Last War: Survival, the satisfying VR first-person lane running feel of Beat Saber, and the miniature city vibes from Brass Tactics and Little Cities VR.
The vision: stand inside your fantasy city in VR, fight through fast-paced lane encounters, then look down at your tiny stronghold and feel like its guardian.
How I Built It
I built this project solo in about three weeks, so I leaned hard on tools and best in class VR art assets.
Art & Worldbuilding I heavily leveraged modular low-poly assets from my favorite artists at Synty Studios. Their assets work great with procedural generation letting me rapidly prototype everything from dungeon corridors to cities without spending the whole hackathon in Blender.
Interaction & VR Systems I utilized the Meta Interaction SDK extensively for hands, grabbing, ray interactions, and movement. This let me focus on game feel—smooth lane dodging, spell casting, and interacting with the city—rather than reinventing VR input from scratch.
Data-Driven & Procedural Design Under the hood, I rely on data, templates, and ScriptableObjects to drive units, enemies, encounters, and upgrades. Combined with procedural generation code for lanes and dungeons, the game can scale easily with new content without rewriting core systems.
Challenges
The biggest challenge was time.
I had hoped to team up, but it didn’t work out, so everything—design, code, art integration, UX, VR tuning, the video—was on me. Building the project from scratch in just three weeks meant constant trade-offs: polish vs. new features, scope vs. stability.
