Inspiration

Heroin has the ability to take lives, tear families apart, and harm even innocent bystanders. As students of the University of Waterloo, University of Western Ontario, and University of Toronto, we have experienced the crisis in our communities. Most notably is the presence of used needles on the ground. And thus, we came with the idea of Hero, the one-stop solution to the heroin crisis.

What it does

Included is a webapp which provides a landing page for both heroin users and non-users. Features for heroin users include a chat bot to seek help, and local Google Maps-based resources for hospitals, clinics, and drug therapy. Features for non-users include local Google Maps-based resources for naloxone training, donation suggestions, and a service to report a needle. This service allows users to take a photo of a needle and pin it on a map, providing a visual representation of the prolific nature of the heroin crisis.

How we built it

Using front-end tools (HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Bootstrap), the webpage frameworks were built. Adding onto those frameworks, we utilized the Google Maps API to generate personalized maps based on client location, and generate local clinics, hospitals, etc. Furthermore, DialogFlow was used to create a personalized and responsive chat bot, capable of being run through a simple iframe.

Challenges we ran into

  • Communication issues
  • Same origin policy
  • Database access issues

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Created a responsive and aesthetically pleasing website
  • Created a full-featured chat bot
  • Made something good for the world!

What we learned

  • Databases are finnicky and sometimes hard to access
  • When you don't succeed, try try again
  • Teamwork makes the dream work
  • Princeton is beautiful
