Inspiration

Menstruation is a natural process, yet many women hesitate to discuss it openly, even with family. This lack of awareness and support can lead to serious health issues, including PCOD, PCOS, cervical cancer one of the most common yet preventable cancers among women. Many avoid hospital visits due to societal stigma or discomfort, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. HerNest aims to break these barriers by providing a safe, private, and accessible platform for tracking periods, consulting doctors, and getting the right guidance.

What it does

HerNest provides two user types:

  1. Normal User:
    • Track menstrual cycles through a calendar.
    • AI chatbot to clarify menstrual health concerns.
    • Book doctor consultations and receive a virtual meeting link.
    • Find nearby pharmacies if medication is prescribed.
  2. Doctor User:
    • View daily appointments.
    • Send virtual consultation links to users via a notification center.

How we built it

  • Frontend: TypeScript with React for a seamless UI.
  • Backend: Node.js with Express for API handling.
  • Database: Supabase for storing user logs, appointments, and chat records.
  • AI Chatbot: OpenAI API (GPT based Model) for answering user queries.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Validating Doctors: Ensuring that only certified medical professionals can register and consult users.
  2. Providing Data Security: Protecting sensitive user data, including menstrual health records and consultations.
  3. AI Chatbot Accuracy: Training the chatbot to provide reliable, medically sound responses while avoiding misinformation.
  4. User Anonymity & Privacy: Allowing users to seek help while maintaining anonymity, especially in conservative communities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating an inclusive and judgment-free platform.
  • Seamless AI chatbot integration for quick responses.
  • Effortless doctor consultation booking via an intuitive UI.
  • A privacy-first approach ensuring users feel safe.

What we learned

  • The importance of UX/UI in health techβ€”users prefer discreet and simple interfaces.
  • AI needs carefully curated responses for sensitive topics.
  • Privacy laws like HIPAA/GDPR must be followed strictly.

What's next for HERNEST

  1. Nearby Pharmacy Locator for easy access to prescribed medication.
  2. AI/ML Models for Early Detection of Cervical Cancer.
  3. Mobile App Version for Android/iOS.
  4. Symptom-based health insights to detect irregularities.
  5. Community Support Groups where users can talk anonymously.
  6. AI-based Period Predictions for better tracking.
  7. Insurance/Financial Support options for low-income users.
