Inspiration

We care for the elderly community and wanted to create something that would benefit them and others.

What it does

Hermes allows elderly users to be in direct contact with their caregivers within seconds. This app-based program has a simple interface with six main buttons to tap on, each requesting a different demand. Requests are as followed: emergency, water & food, recreation, assistance, bathroom, and alarm. When a button is pressed, the caregiver will automatically be sent a message with the desired request. The goal of this application is to ensure elder safety and maintain caregiver accountability. Overall, Hermes grants direct elder communication and attentive care.

How we built it

We used MIT App Inventor to create the application.

Challenges we ran into

Since this was our first Hackathon and some of us have no experience in coding, we found difficulties in figuring out the simplest methods that would be inclusive for us at our skill range.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We all worked together and had lots of fun. We're also happy that we were able to create something.

What we learned

We learned that not everything is going to work out the first time and that skill blocks can be worked around with patience and communication.

What's next for Hermes

Hermes can potentially be implemented on a much bigger and more advanced scale to assist those who are caring for a loved one but cannot be by their side 24/7. With more time, there could be more commands and functions incorporated into the application design, as well as an area to put personalized information and contacts. (Quick disclaimer: The phone number used in developing the app is a real phone number, so upon publication, the number will no longer be in use to prevent spam from being sent.)
