Inspiration
Hand in hand with all contemporary crises like climate change, wars, COVID goes one other crisis that hinders the resolution of the others - misinformation. We take the well-known practice of peer-review from the scientific community and transfer it to journalism - with expert review.
What it does
Hermes allows and encourages experts to review the quality of a news piece in a couple of clicks and allows all other users to receive and read their news with the necessary context about the quality of the news source, of the particular news piece and truthfulness of its specific statements.
How we built it
We implemented a website prototype for seeing aggregated news and redirecting to the original news website. After the user or expert are on the site, they use our browser plugin to view annotations and add them. The website frontend was written in Reactjs and the plugin in JS.
Challenges we ran into
Time, lack of sleep, small community of plugin developers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Having a functioning frontend for the website that proves the concept and rudimentary plugin functionality.
What we learned
Making choices earlier, React and plugin dev, dealing with stress.
What's next for Hermes
Polishing the news aggregator frontend, connecting the plugin pieces with the other infrastructure and both the frontend and the plugin to a functioning backend.
