Inspiration
Women's historical achievements have often been overlooked in traditional narratives. HerMap aims to visualize these important milestones geographically and chronologically, making women's history more accessible and interactive for modern audiences.
What it does
HerMap is an interactive web-based platform that plots significant events in women's history on a terrain-based world map. Users can explore historical events through a timeline slider (1900-2030), view detailed event information through custom-styled popups, and AI-powered event descriptions.
How we built it
We developed HerMap using modern web technologies:
- Frontend: HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript
- Map Integration: Leaflet.js with ArcGIS terrain and reference layers
- Data Management: Structured JSON for historical events
- Interactive Features: Custom timeline controls and marker management system
- AI-powered event descriptions: DeepSeek API
Challenges we ran into
- Implementing smooth transitions between different time periods
- Differentiate closely-spaced map markers
- Website deployment issues, particularly with server configuration
- Dealing with missing or broken image links
- API integration
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Created a seamless, intuitive timeline interface for exploring historical events
- Developed a clean, professional UI with custom-styled markers and popups
- Successfully integrated multiple map layers for enhanced geographic context
What we learned
- Frontend development workflow and logic
- Third-party API integration techniques
- Data visualization and geospatial mapping
- Publishing website
