We were inspired by one of our studies into Genetic Inheritance as a Pre Med Student. Given the even more increasing availability of genetic testing, this tool aims to educate and inform people of the different types of hereditary diseases and traits.
What it does
Herediscope takes a few data points from input by the user, asking a few questions, then uses an algorithm to calculate the rough average percentage of a given genetic inheritance
How we built it
We built it using Xcode.
Challenges we ran into
The main problem we ran into was converting the usual methods of obtaining genotypes and phenotypes into algorithms that could be applied in a CS manner.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is all of our member's first time at a hackathon, so we are very proud to have actually come up with and completed the project we brought forward.
What we learned
We learned that in order to tackle more serious problems in hackathons, and specifically in healthcare, a large knowledge of algorithms and data structures goes a long way. As we do not have said extensive experience, we were not able to tackle the more difficult parts of our project, having to settle for the simpler parts as proof of concept.
What's next for Heridiscope
Herediscope will live on as our first major project together, and we hope to continue participating and competing in hackathons around the country.
