AI for PCOS: Understanding Your Body, Empowering Your Health
Our Inspiration
As four South Asian women of colour, this project is personal.
PCOS disproportionately affects South and East Asian women, yet we are often dismissed with phrases like “Everything heals in time.”
We wanted to create something that understands our bodies, our symptoms, and our patterns, because the healthcare system often overlooks women, especially women of colour.
“Women make up over 50% of patients but only 33% of clinical trial participants — leaving many misdiagnosed or ignored.”
What We Learned
- The importance of inclusive medical research — historical bias in male-focused studies leaves gaps in care.
- How AI can spot patterns that doctors might miss, especially when tracking complex symptoms like cycles, mood, diet, and sleep.
- Designing for accessibility: low-income households, non-binary users, and culturally sensitive features.
How We Built It
- Symptom Tracking: Created categories for cycles, mood, hirsutism, sleep, diet.
- AI Pattern Recognition: Built an algorithm to detect trends and correlations across symptoms.
- Personalized Calendar Integration: Generates ICS files that sync with Google Calendar for reminders and trend visualization.
- Visual Dashboard: Clear display of trends over time to empower users to take control. Developed using React and HTML to display insights clearly.
- Personalized Calendar Integration: Generates ICS files that sync with Google Calendar for reminders and trend visualization.
Our Impact
- Provides personalized insights without diagnosing, empowering users to understand their bodies.
- Bridges the gender gap in medical research by helping users see patterns missed by healthcare providers.
- Makes PCOS tracking accessible, inclusive, and culturally sensitive.
Tech Stack
- Python – AI pattern recognition
- React – Interactive web dashboard
- HTML/CSS – Front-end structure and styling
- Google Calendar ICS – Personalized symptom tracking
Challenges We Ran Into
- Connecting Front-End and Back-End: Ensuring smooth communication between React/HTML interface and Python AI.
- Front-End Revamping: Constantly reiterating to make sure front-end was in the best state for integration to back end
- Back-End Integration with AI: Linking the AI algorithm to track symptoms and generate insights in real time.
- Targeting what our solution was Narrowing down our scope to a specific solution
- Time Constraints: Completing a functional, polished prototype within the hackathon schedule.
