Inspiration Having watched loved ones struggle through breast cancer treatments with limited support resources, we witnessed firsthand the isolation many women experience during this challenging journey. Research shows that comprehensive support systems significantly improve outcomes for breast cancer patients, yet there remains a critical gap between clinical care and day-to-day emotional support. What if we could create a platform that ensures no woman faces breast cancer alone? This question drove our team to build HerHope during our 24-hour hackathon — a personalized support platform that connects women with resources, guidance, and compassionate care throughout their breast cancer journey. We believe every woman deserves supportive care tailored to her unique experience. What it does HerHope provides comprehensive breast cancer support through:
🏠 In-home support during treatment and recovery 👩⚕️ Personalized care plans tailored to specific diagnoses and needs ⏰ 24/7 availability through both human care teams and a digital assistant 💰 Comprehensive coverage options making quality support accessible 🤗 Emotional guidance through both one-on-one and group sessions 💬 AI-powered chat assistant that answers questions about treatment, offers coping strategies, and connects users with resources
Our platform serves as a compassionate companion through every step of the breast cancer journey. 🛠️ How we built it We developed HerHope using: AI Assistant: A RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) system integrated with Gemini API Knowledge Base (Corpus): Curated from evidence-based oncology resources, clinical guidelines, and triage protocols Frontend: React with a warm, thoughtfully designed UI featuring soft pink and peach gradients Backend: Flask to serve our AI assistant and handle user interactions Design: Figma for wireframes, User-centered approach focused on warmth, accessibility, and emotional support
The most complex component was our RAG-based AI assistant, which we built within our 24-hour hackathon timeframe. Trimming down categories, Going through the datasets, Cleaning, Chunking and pre processing the data took time. We combined the power of Gemini API with our custom RAG implementation to create a system that delivers both accurate medical information and empathetic responses. 🚧 Challenges we ran into Building HerHope within a 24-hour hackathon presented several challenges:
Implementing an effective RAG system that could retrieve relevant medical information while maintaining a compassionate tone Integrating Gemini API with our Flask backend and ensuring smooth communication between components Time constraints forcing us to strategically prioritize a high-quality knowledge base over complex features Processing and indexing medical research to make it accessible without overwhelming users with technical jargon Designing an interface that balances warmth with medical professionalism
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building a functional RAG-based cancer nursing Q&A model within 24 hours Successfully integrating Gemini API with our custom retrieval system Achieving satisfaction in initial testing Creating a system that demonstrates AI's potential to support nursing education and practice Successfully integrating evidence-based protocols while maintaining a compassionate user experience Working towards a cause
📚 What we learned
The critical importance of combining technology with human compassion in healthcare solutions How to integrate Gemini API with a custom RAG implementation in a Flask backend Proper planning and focused execution are essential when working within tight timeframes Creating a high-quality, domain-specific knowledge base is more valuable than implementing complex features that might not function properly in limited time
🚀 What's next for HerHope
Refining our RAG implementation with more specialized resources and improved chunking strategies Expanding services to support women with other types of cancer Developing a mobile application for even more accessible support Creating more community features to connect women with similar diagnoses Enhancing our AI assistant's capabilities while maintaining the human touch
Our hackathon project is just the beginning of what we believe will become a transformative platform that ensures no woman ever has to navigate cancer alone. 💓
